KATHMANDU, August 27: India is considering lifting the ban on export of wheat and sugar to Nepal. The ban has been in place for the past two months.
Speaking at a program organized by Sunsari Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Dharan on Saturday, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava said a talk is currently underway with the central government to lift the restriction on daily essentials to Nepal.
Govt writes to India to lift ban on wheat export to Nepal
Since June 1, India has been imposing a ban on the export of sugar and wheat. This has hit the supply of these agro products in Nepal and has helped hike their prices. While the retail price of sugar has reached Rs 110 per kg, the price of wheat flour has increased by around Rs 10 per kg in the local market.
According to Ambassador Srivastava, the Indian government is also looking forward to resume transport operation via Mirganj Bridge in India, about four kilometers south of Rani Border in Biratnagar, which has remained closed since last year. The bridge was damaged by a flood last year.
