KATHMANDU, Jan 26: On the occasion of 69th Republic Day of India, the Indian government conferred the Padma Shri award on famed ophthalmologist Dr Sanduk Ruit.

“Ruit has been instilling vision to more than 100,000 cataract patients at nominal costs,” the official twitter handle of India's Press Information Bureau wrote adding that through Ruit's technology, cost of the surgery had reduced by 90 percent. The technology is also being used in more than 30 countries where almost four million people have been able to see the world again.
Every week, Dr Ruit carries out surgeries on 2,500 people. Dr Ruit was born at Olanchungola of Taplejung district. Dr Ruit is the founder and Director of Nepal's Tilganga Eye Center.
In June 2006, Dr Ruit was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the prestigious and biggest award of Asia region.
