Indian with Nepali citizenship by descent arrested

KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku on Tuesday arrested an Indian who had been living in Nepal since the last 34 years on the charge of taking Nepali citizenship through presentation of fake documents.

KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku on Tuesday arrested an Indian who had been living in Nepal since the last 34 years on the charge of taking Nepali citizenship through presentation of fake documents. 



The arrested has been identified as Shyam Lal Saraogi and his citizenship indicates that he is from Indra Chowk, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-27. He has been operating different business in Nepal for years. Police investigators tipped off by a special source found that Saraogi was originally from Bhajalapur, Gujrat in India and has recently been living at Kuleshwar, Kathmandu.



According to SP Sahakul Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson at Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Saraogi, who holds an Indian identity card and a voter registration number, was able to acquire Nepali citizenship by descent in 1982 from the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. The 61-year-old is found to have passed the SLC in Nepal.



Saraogi, the son of Ghanashyam Lal, could not establish the Nepali citizenship of his father, said SP Thapa. So he will have to face charges as per the Citizenship Act 2063. 



If proved guilty, he can be stripped of his Nepali citizenship and face other penalties. As pet the Act, a foreign individual who has acquired Nepali citizenship through the submission of fake documents can be imprisoned for one to five years or fined Rs 50,000 to 100,000, or both. 



Saraogi has been sent to the Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu, for further action.
