Japan tops list as 80 percent of Nepali students opt for study abroad in five key countries

KATHMANDU, July 24:  As many as 112,593 students received foreign study permits (NOCs) to study abroad in the last fiscal year 2023/24. These permits were issued from 17 July, 2023 to 15 July, 2024.

KATHMANDU, July 24:  As many as 112,593 students received foreign study permits (NOCs) to study abroad in the last fiscal year 2023/24. These permits were issued from 17 July, 2023 to 15 July, 2024.


According to the data from the Ministry of Education, students are heading to 66 different countries for their studies. However, 80 percent of them have chosen five countries: Japan, Canada, Australia, the UK, and the USA. Japan is the most popular destination, with 34,731 students obtaining NOCs. Canada follows with 15,982 students, then Australia with 14,372, the UK with 13,339, and the USA with 11,261 students. South Korea also saw a significant number of students, with 6,889 NOCs issued.

In terms of subjects, 33,697 NOCs were issued for Japanese studies, 28,891 for management, 10,029 for business, 4,159 for health, and 4,102 for science and technology.


The NOC branch of the ministry noted that the number of NOCs might vary as the old NOCs are canceled when new ones are issued.
