JHAPA, Dec 6: Rumpum Jhapa XI has progressed to the semifinals of the ongoing Sharanamati Gold Cup registering 2-1 victory over Morang XI on Tuesday.
In the match held at Janata Secondary School's ground at Sharanamati, Jhapa, Yogesh Gurung and Gilson Kandengwa netted one goal each for the winning side Jhapa XI while Rajin Dhimal notched a consolation goal.
Jhapa XI started the game with attacking intensity, creating numerous scoring chances. However, it had to wait until the 22nd minute to take the lead. Yogesh Gurung scored a beautiful goal from 20 yards beating Morang's goalkeeper Puran Chemjong.
After trailing down by a goal, Morang started to pile up pressure on Jhapa in search of equalizer. However, it failed to convert any of the chances it created. In the stoppage time of the first half, Morang's Rajin Dhimal was close to target but his shot went wide.
Jhapa extended its lead 10 minutes into second half through Gilson Kandengwa's goal. Gilson netted through a freekick from the edge of the box after Bishal Rai was fouled by Morang's Bikram Limbu in the box.
Rajin Dhimal scored a goal for Morang in the stoppage time of the second half but it wasn't enough to save his team from defeat.
Jhapa's goal scorer Yogesh Gurung was declared man-of-the-match and was awarded Rs 2500.
Kankai Sports Academy and Kanchanjunga Football Club of Siliguri, India will vie on the Wednesday.
