KATHMANDU, July 11: Dengue cases have increased in Kailali compared to last year. This year, a total of 1,001 people have been infected with dengue, whereas last year only 455 people were affected with the disease.
According to Tikapur Municipality Health Branch Chief Bal Bahadur Rawal, last year, 173 people in Dhangadhi, 113 in Lamkichuha, 72 in Bardagoriya, 40 in Tikapur, four in Janaki, five in Bhajani and six in Joshipur were infected with dengue.
In the year 2023, three people died of dengue in Kailali. Among the 10 high-risk districts of dengue, Kailai ranks in the 9th position. Besides dengue, Kailai is also at high risk of scrub typhus. This year, 737 scrub typhus cases were reported in the district.
Last year, 529 patients came for treatment. There were 73 cases of scrub typhus in Tikapur and 301 in Lamki Chuha.
The local municipalities have been carrying out various activities like mosquito larvae destruction campaigns, cleanliness campaigns, public awareness programs, and publicity for preventing and controlling the infection.

According to Dilip Kumar Shah of Tikapur Hospital, the best way to avoid contracting the disease is to be vigilant as dengue becomes harmful when it occurs repeatedly in humans.
“There is a high risk of contracting dengue frequently and people should know that if they survive the mosquito bites during the rainy season, many diseases can be avoided.”
Dr Shah said that there are three conditions of dengue. While the fever stage is not very risky, it could be dangerous in sensitive cases so treatment should be done as soon as possible.
Medical Superintendent of Tikapur Hospital, Dr Rem Kumar Rai, has formulated a plan focusing on the required medicines, and treatments in emergencies, with 24 doctors at the hospital.
He said that awareness and vigilance are necessary as several cases of dengue and typhus are reported at this time of the year.
“Given the risks in the district, we face pressure from the patients. With monsoon still in sight and the number of cases increasing rapidly, we are prepared,” he said, “The doctors will not seek a leave during this time and we have ensured access to all the required medicines and equipment.”
Chairman of Tikapur Hospital, Jhapat Sodari urged the municipality to help in the hospital's waste management.
“Several diseases are caused by the lack of waste management, so we have to pay attention to cleanliness to avoid infectious diseases,” he said, “We have two waste processing autoclave machines. The municipality can recycle its plastic waste at our facility.”
Chairman Sodari said that they are ready to cooperate since they can also sterilize the waste of Tikapur and other municipalities nearby.
