UDAYAPUR, Aug 13: Nilam Khadka, 24, and Chitra Bahadur Dahal, 43, of Katari Municipality-3, Udayapur have been found infected with dengue. The district’s Katari Hospital said these are among the rarest cases in the district.

Hospital Superintendent Dr Pawan Sah informed that both of them were suffering from high fever since the last six days and tests at the hospital confirmed dengue virus infection. “The blood tests conducted on Sunday evening showed they were infected with dengue virus,” Dr Sah said.

Dahal and Khadka are uncle and niece. According to the patients, they had visited a relative’s house in Dharan some time ago. So Dr Sah suspects that they might have contracted the dengue virus in Dharan itself. “Both the patients are out of danger and under observation now,” said Sah.

Since the Katari Hospital had so far not recorded any dengue case in Katari, the doctors urged the public to take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Dr Sah stressed the need for launching public awareness campaign against the dengue-causing mosquitoes. “We can prevent the spread of dengue-causing mosquitoes by keeping the surroundings clean. As mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant waters, every household should remove stagnant water especially after rainfall,” added Sah.

The hospital has also written to the higher authorities to provide some dengue-test kits. The mayor of Katari Municipality, Gyanendra Shrestha, stated that his office has decided to conduct health checkup for the municipality residents and arrange necessary medicines for the treatment of the dengue-infected, if any.
