KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Due to negligence in the management of the Chakuncha Khahare Khola (seasonal stream) which was excavated by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) to widen up the river to its natural banks, a flood occurred in the Milan Chowk and Sattalle areas of Kapan.
Navraj Bhattarai, the ward chairman of Budhanilkantha Municipality-10, has alleged that due to the KMC’s unplanned excavation of the seasonal stream during the rainy season, locals have to suffer a lot because of lack of management.

“The KMC hastened to demolish the structures near the river. The KMC did not care to manage as much as it did to destroy. We protested at the time of demolition. We let it be demolished only after the three-point agreement, but now the flood has entered the slum areas and the KMC has been quiet,” Ward Chairman Bhattarai said.
“It has been agreed to build a bailey bridge to go to the houses near Khahare Khola or make it easier to go to the house by other means, build a wall around the Khahare River, and manage the soil and sand extracted from the river.” He said, “Only after that we were allowed to remove the Khahare structure and hume pipe. But now the KMC has remained silent. There were occurrences of floods before. We suggested this action will bring problems in the rainy season, but they neglected it.”
The Kapan area was inundated by overnight rains on Thursday. The flood from Khahare Khola has entered the houses of that area. The ground floors of the houses in the area from Milan Chowk to Sattale are flooded.
