Kidney patient jumps to his death at TUTH

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: A renal patient, who was undergoing dialysis at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) reportedly committed suicide by jumping off the third floor of the hospital on Monday night.

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: A renal patient, who was undergoing dialysis at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) reportedly committed suicide by jumping off the third floor of the hospital on Monday night.


Bijaya Khadka, 18, of Malu VDC-4, Dolakha district, who was admitted at the nephrology ward some three weeks ago jumped from the window at 1:50 am and died in the course of treatment at the hospital.

 

According to Govinda Puri, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgung, police have been investigating into the death.

Dr Deepak Mahara, director at the TUTH, informed that Khadka was regular patient of the hospital and had been receiving free dialysis service under the government's free dialysis scheme. “This week he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of chest infection,” he said, adding that the patient was admitted to the nephrology ward. He informed that Khadka was also suffering from depression and had been receiving psychiatric consultations.


“The ailment from which he was suffering might be the cause of his depression,” Dr Mahara said. He also informed that Khadka was not in queue for kidney transplant in the hospital.


Khadka's brother Binit informed that their financial status was not good and all the savings of his family was already spent in his treatment. “Our financial condition is not good so he was depressed from the situation,” said Khadka's brother Binit.
