KATHMANDU, July 25: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is planning to launch what it has called ‘Recharge Kathmandu Program’ with a view to avoiding groundwater-related land subsidence by increasing the underground water level of the city.
A hydrologic process in which water moves downward from the earth’s surface to its underground part will be used for the program.
“Kathmandu is at high risk of moving down below its current surface because of the groundwater depletion,” said Information Officer at KMC Basanta Acharya.

He added that KMC has a plan to make the denizens of Kathmandu valley aware of the program.
According to him, a small hole will be created from which extra water will be passed and collected beneath the ground so as to increase the underground water level. The rainwater and extra water from the household activities will be collected and passed through the hole to increase the underground water level.
According to its plan, KMC will first choose the open spaces of school buildings, apartments, and hospitals to make a hole in an effort to increase the underground water level of the city to prevent it from subsiding.
The budget for the program has already been endorsed and the work will begin within a month, Acharya added.
KMC Spokesperson Ishwor Man Dangol told Republica Online that the program will possibly start in late August after completing all financial procedures by mid-August.
