Local authorities decide to enforce odd-even rule for vehicles in Kathmandu Valley from Friday midnight

KATHMANDU, Jan 20: Keeping in view of the rising cases of COVID-19, local administrations have decided to enforce odd-even rule for both public and private vehicles in Kathmandu Valley from Friday midnight.

KATHMANDU, Jan 20: Keeping in view of the rising cases of COVID-19, local administrations have decided to enforce odd-even rule for both public and private vehicles in Kathmandu Valley from Friday night.


A joint meeting of the Chief District Officers (CDOs) of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur on Thursday made a decision to enforce the new rule in order to contain further spread of COVID-19 pandemic.  As per the decision, the vehicle with the even registration number can operate on the even date and those with the odd registration number can operate on the odd dates according to Nepali calendar.

According to Chief District Officer of Lalitpur Ghanashyam Upadhyay, the new rule was enforced as per the procedures endorsed recently by the government to enforce a smart lockdown. 


The decision of local authorities comes in the wake of Kathmandu Valley recording 6,981 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. The number accounts for more than half of the total new cases recorded across the country on the same day. 


The government has already enforced a rule to all public vehicles not to carry passengers beyond their capacity and mandatorily wear masks to containfurther spread of the COVID-19. Officials said the odd and even rule applies also for the two-wheelers.
