JHAPA, Jan 25: Standing committee member of the CPN-UML Agni Kharel has said that no one could extend even by a single day the five-year term of the local governments determined by the constitution.

In a press meet organized at Birtamod of Jhapa today, Kharel opined that the CPN-UML would not tolerate if the local election is postponed, violating the constitution.

Also a former Law Minister, Kharel shared, “The election that should be held in May cannot be postponed to December. This is the local government, not the local body. The constitution has clearly mentioned a five-year term for the local governments.”

He accused the government of making preparations not to hold the local-level elections and was ready to push the country toward a situation of uncertainty without the people’s representatives as before.

Kharel expressed the view that the five-year term of the local governments could not be extended even by a single day and it would not be possible to keep the local bodies without the people’s representatives even for a single day.

He claimed that ‘early election’ or three-tier election at the same time means a plan not to hold an election.
