Locals scared as a woman is killed by bear

JUMLA, Oct 24: Ruda Dangi, 55, of Lamra village in Tatopani Municipality-5 has died after being attacked by a bear. DSP Dan Bahadur Thapa, who heads the District Police Office, Jumla, said that the deceased woman was a guard of Gadapari Community Forest.

JUMLA, Oct 24: Ruda Dangi, 55, of Lamra village in Tatopani Municipality-5 has died after being attacked by a bear. DSP Dan Bahadur Thapa, who heads the District Police Office, Jumla, said that the deceased woman was a guard of Gadapari Community Forest.


According to the locals, the bear attacked her at around 12 noon while she was in the forest. The body of the deceased has been taken to Karnali Institute of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Jumla for postmortem.

A local Surya Dangi said, "I heard someone screaming from the forest in the morning. It was reported later that the bear had attacked and killed a person in the afternoon."


The bear had been roaring in the forest near the village for two days. Locals say that it went to the forest from near the hot water stream on Friday. Locals are scared after bears started entering the village during the daytime. 


Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army personnel have been mobilized in the area where the bear had attacked and killed people. Locals said that the bear has already escaped.


Dangi was found by the farmers, who had gone to fetch paddy in the field. The bear has two cubs. It is said that the bear had even killed a cow that was grazing in the forest. The bear was coming toward the river to drink water when it came across Dangi.
