KATHMANDU, March 19: Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has argued that making Nepal free from violent conflict is a major achievement made by the government.

Addressing the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Friday, Foreign Minister Gyawali, who is also the spokesperson of CPN-UML, said Nepal had transformed into a country without any violent conflict after the government successfully mainstreamed the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) that was carrying out violent activities across the country and CK Raut-led group that carried out its activities to establish a separate state in the southern plain.

Gyawali cited the recommendation made by the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP), a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for Nepal’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category with a preparatory period of five years as another important achievement of the Oli-led government. The CDP, in its triennial review held from 22 to 26 February 2021, had made this recommendation as Nepal had met the criteria for graduation for three consecutive reviews.

Minister Gyawali also termed the success to bring water from Melamchi to Sundarijal as another important achievement made by the government. He said that the water from the Melamchi River has already reached Kathmandu and the water will be supplied to all households in Kathmandu Valley starting next week.

Addressing the meeting on behalf of the government, the government also said that the historic Sunkoshi Marin Diversion work had started in Nepal during this period. He argued that the project could change the fate of people living in various districts in Province 2 as this would ensure a perennial supply of water for irrigation and also generate hydropower.

Gyawali also listed the foundation laying ceremony of the basic hospital in 396 Rural Municipalities across the country on the same day and endorsing a new political map that includes Kalapani, Lipu Lekh, and Limpiyadhura as Nepali territory and making this an agenda for any future talks with India as two other major achievements of the government.

On the occasion, Minister Gyawali also defended the move of Prime Minister Oli to dissolve the parliament, and the incidents that they could see after the reinstatement of the parliament had further justified the move taken by the parliament. He argued that the move of the prime minister was termed as a regressive move as this thwarted the ambition of one particular leader to become prime minister of the country.
