KATHMANDU, Jan 2: The Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu has started to rescue and rehabilitate children and elderly from the streets. The move comes as Kathmandu's temperatures dip -- leaving those living on the streets prone to death and other risks.
According to DSP Hobindra Bogati, spokesperson of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, the initiative aims to rescue those living on the street and hand them over to their respective families. "We will identify what forced them to live on the streets, find their families and rehabilitate them," Bogati said.
Police rescue 7 homeless from Kathmandu streets
The initiative started from yesterday evening. On its first day, the Police Range rescued seven people from Kalimati, Swayambhu, and Sitapaila area. They have been referred to the Himalaya Elderly Home, Gongabu. The rescued people include Bhimsen Baskota (40), Rabi Thapa (50), Dipesh Rai (55), Nawaraj Thakuri (54), Ram Kaji (40), Lakshman Dhakal (50) and Gyanendra Singh (67).
Bogati said that apart from finding their family members, the police was also coordinating with different associations for necessary treatment for those rescued. The Police Division said that they'd step up this effort to keep Kathmandu's streets managed, safer and bring change among people who make a living on the streets of Kathmandu.
