KATHMANDU, Dec 19: As many as 216 homeless and elderly people living in the streets in various parts of Kathmandu were rescued in the past four days, the Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu said on Thursday.
As part of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City's campaign to make the capital 'street people free zone', Nepal police personnel rescued them from various places of Kathmandu including Gaushala, Chabhil, Bouddha, Jorpati, Kalimati, Kuleswor, Kalanki, Swayambhu, Sinamangal, Bhatkeko Pool, Seto Pool, and Naya Buspark.

Manab Sewa Ashram, various social organizations and local residents also participated in the campaign that was launched by the Kathmandu Metropolis on December 15.
However, this is not the first time such a campaign has been launched. Earlier in January this year, the Metropolitan Police Range had conducted a program to rescue homeless elderly people. The initiative was launched in the wake of media reports that at least one elderly person was dying of cold on an average after the start of winter.
This time also, the elderly people who were rescued by the police personnel were sent to Manab Sewa Ashram. The ashram is a popular elderly home that has been providing shelter to hundreds of elderly people across the country for the past several years.
Ashram, in partnership with Pashupati Area Development Trust, had earlier rehabilitated 135 beggars languishing around the Pashupatinath area at Gaushala.
The homeless and elderly people are largely found in miserable conditions around Pashupatinath and Swoyambhunath temples.
