KATHMANDU, August 16: Minister for Youth and Sports Rajendra Kumar KC has laid the foundation stone of an international-standard multipurpose covered hall in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The covered hall is being built on the premises of Tribhuvan University (TU), in Kirtipur Municipality of Kathmandu.
The hall is being constructed on an empty space along the western side of the international cricket ground of TU.

To construct the hall, TU has provided National Sports Council (NSC) with 74 ropanis of land, which is estimated to be worth Rs 820 million. The estimate excludes the leveling of ground, building of parking space, and construction of retaining wall, among others. Out of the total land, 24 ropanis are reserved just for a parking space that can accommodate 235 four-wheelers and 387 motorcycles.
The covered hall will have a capacity of 5,000 spectators. It will have various facilities such as an international-standard gymnasium hall, an administrative building, a sports education department, a re-energizing hall, a match official’s hall, dressing rooms, a media room, and indoor practice halls, among others.
Addressing the inaugural event, Minister KC said that the construction of the covered hall would make the entire area of Kirtipur, TU, and the whole nation proud.
He assured that money would not be an issue for construction of the hall, and said he would do his best to ensure completion of the construction works.
He said that fast, robust and long-lasting technologies will be used for the construction works, adding that Nepal needed better infrastructure for the success of the 13th South Asian Games (SAG).
Member Secretary of NSC Keshav Kumar Bista said that they needed everyone’s support for successful completion of the construction works of the covered hall, adding that the hall would be required for SAG.
Mayor of Kirtipur Municipality Ramesh Maharjan expressed his commitment to support the construction works of the hall, hailing it as a matter of pride for the residents of Kirtipur.
Likewise, Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mahesh Prasad Dahal, said that it was the beginning of an encouraging work for the development of sports.
