ARGHAKHACHI, March 28: Some of the local bodies have allocated very low budget to purchase medicine that is distributed free at public health posts. While some locals are concerned that such low budget would further deteriorate already sorry health scenario in the district, local body representatives are confident that they can address the shortage after analyzing the situation.
“After the federal set up, many things are in confusion or dilemma. Earlier, we would get medicines and vaccines from the health ministry almost directly. Now, the federal government deals with the central government in many issues. Along with that the local government has direct decision power in most of the cases, so we will be able to take appropriate decision when required,” said Kamal Prasad Bhushal, Mayor of Sandhikharka Municipality.
Municipalities without facilities
“Earlier, we were expecting that the central and provincial government would provide us the medicine. But we have come to know that it is not the case,” he said informing that his municipality has allocated half a million for purchasing medicine for the current fiscal year.
Bhumikasthan Rural Municipality has allocated Rs 460,000 for medicinal purchase. The highest budget for purchasing medicine has been allocated by the Chhatradev Rural Municipality. It has spared Rs five million for purchasing medicine. Other municipalities and rural municipalities have allocated below one million.
“It is very much true that the money allocated for medicine is very low. It is the same with almost all the municipalities. Actually, everyone was confused over the new provisions,” explained Bhushal. “From next year, we will make correction. And even this year if need be, we will review it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of Chhatradev Rural Municipality, Lekhnath Pokhrel proudly stated that his municipality was ‘wise’. “We have allocated sufficient budget for health and education sector,” he said. “We are also careful about fair distribution of old age allowance and other benefits to people,” he added.
