With more than 1.3 million young people in 144 countries, Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a prestigious youth achievement award helping young people widen their skills and engage them towards being innovative, intrigue and inspiring human being. The award which is open to anyone from age 14 to 24 comes with an outstanding package of learning through experience while developing their skills, keeping them physically fit and giving them a sense of responsibility towards the society. Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award was founded by Prince Philip in 1956 with an aim of bringing the holistic development in young people which makes them accountable for their future goals and 8 million young people have completed an Award.
My journey with Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award started from February 2018. Since then, I am actively taking part and trying to share my zeal and aspiration to our participants so that they will complete their award. Personally, I have got a good platform as an Award Leader to nourish my skills and develop a sense of responsibility in me as I have to deal with many young people with different characteristics and perception. If I need to talk about Award Coordinators and Award Leaders of Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, we all are significantly trying our best to bring out creative ideas where the learning is beyond the classroom bells and effective and engaging. The sessions we do in Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award gives our participants an idea about various topics like Navigation, First Aid et cetera and all those distinctively enhances the life skills. It allows young people to come out of a comfort zone which means the things we do is not always easy but certainly are very meaningful and ends with pleasure and satisfaction. As a person leading the award, I have observed that the participants really enjoy their task. Sometimes they have to be constantly knocked for holding up their hours for many weeks, but, they certainly perform and try their best when they are into it. There are three different levels – bronze, silver and gold, and five sections – Skills, Physical Fitness, Volunteering, Expedition, and Residential (Gold Level Only). The activities for each of the sections can be chosen as per the interest and passion of an individual and that is where I see the participants learning better.
