NC leader Giri passes away

KATHMANDU, August 20: Senior Nepali Congress (NC) leader and lawmaker Pradip Giri has passed away while undergoing treatment at Nepal Medicity Hospital on Saturday evening. He was 74.

KATHMANDU, August 20: Senior Nepali Congress (NC) leader and lawmaker Pradip Giri has passed away while undergoing treatment at Nepal Medicity Hospital on Saturday evening. He was 74.


According to the hospital sources, Giri breathed his last at 9:36 PM. "Sad as it is but he is no more, salute Pradeep Giri," tweeted NC leader Minendra Rijal.


Giri underwent treatment in India for several months after he was diagnosed with cancer. His health condition deteriorated shortly after he returned home after treatment.

He was admitted to Nepal Medicity Hospital some one month ago. Most recently, he was suffering from pneumonia, which led to multiple organs failure.


Giri was being treated with ventilator support a week ago as his health condition worsened. He had stopped recognizing people and talking to others a few days ago.


Born in Siraha in eastern Nepal, Giri had earned Master's Degree in Philosophy and Economics from Jawaharlal University, India.


Giri's father Netra Lal Giri was NC leader. Inspired by his father, he joined NC in 1961.


Giri spent four years in jail during the Panchayati regime. He was a popular leader among leaders and cadres.


Giri has also authored over two dozen books. A Gandhian politician, he was among a few leaders in Nepal who could interpret Marxism.
