KATHMANDU, September 1: The process of the 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress (NC) is set to begin from September 3, according to NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharama. He has requested the party’s active members and office-bearers to wear face masks and maintain safety protocols while meeting during the general convention.

Sharma said that there was no other alternative but to hold the general convention even during the midst of the pandemic and appealed to everyone attending the meeting to follow and maintain health protocols for the safety of themselves and society.

Although the row seen in the distribution of active membership has been finally settled, Sharma said that there are still two obstacles to the general convention. One is the risk of the ongoing pandemic. The other is that the date for the general convention has been announced only in 56 of the total 77 districts across the country.

“The NC will be holding its local level conventions from September 3. The general convention is not held only for the central convention or the national convention but is celebrated when each ward of every district holds its convention on the same day,” he said. “I request every active member, well-wishers and leader of NC to wear a mask on the day of the 14th general convention. It is our duty to save ourselves and our family members during such unprecedented times because of the ongoing risk of COVID-19 across the country.”

Sharma further said that the districts that could not take part in the convention for some  reasons can consult the central election committee to defer the convention for a few days. The NC has decided to start the general convention on September 3 in the other districts across the country, Sharma  informed Republica.

For the convention, the NC’s Election Committee has appointed election officers in all districts from the Democratic Lawyers’ Society (DLS) affiliated legal practitioners who are considered close to the party.

The NC has amended their party statute to ensure full democratic exercise right from the local level practice and has made arrangements for the same at tole, ward, village / municipality, province assembly level constituency, constituency of the federal parliament, district working committee, province working committee and central working committee. According to the new statute, the NC Central Working Committee will have a total of 168 members including a president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, eight joint general secretaries, a treasurer and 154 central members.
