NC sees political interference in KU’s decision to grant affiliation to B and C Medical College

KATHMANDU, March 2: The main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), has accused the government of interfering in the decision-making process of Kathmandu University (KU) Senate to grant affiliation to the proposed B and C Medical College in Jhapa to run MBBS classes.

Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, NC’s Central Education Department (CED) charged that the government had undermined the provisions made in all relevant Acts, rules and agreements reached with various stakeholders on different occasions in the past.

CED Secretary Dr Krishna Prasad Paudel has asked the government not to exert any undue political pressure to interfere in the autonomy of the university. Sources said KU decided to grant affiliation to the new medical college amid pressure from the top political leadership in the country.

KU’s decision to grant affiliation to B and C College follows an agreement between the government and Dr Govinda KC not to give any new affiliation to medical colleges until the formation of the Health Profession Education Commission.

Dr KC has been repeatedly staging hunger strikes to put pressure on the government to bring reforms in medical education in the country. According to the agreement, a university is not supposed to give affiliation to more than five medical colleges. But Kathmandu University has already granted affiliation to five medical colleges.
