KATHMANDU, June 17: Nepal imported rice worth Rs 44.46 billion in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, which is 67 percent more than the annual import of the same period of the last fiscal year.
The ‘Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal’ released by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) shows that rice stood at the fifth position of the top imports of Nepal in the review period. In 2020/21, the country imported rice of Rs 26.61 billion.

The government reiterates every now and then to make the country self-reliant in a number of agricultural products, including the staple food. However, the import of the main staple food has been increasing by a notable amount every year.
Government records show that Nepal imported rice worth Rs 22.78 billion in 2018/19, which rose to Rs 24.51 billion in 2019/20. Nepal imports rice mainly from India, Japan, China and Thailand.
