KATHMANDU, Dec 10: After a school teacher was brutally murdered by the outlawed Communist Party of Nepal in Morang, Nepal Police have started close surveillance on the outfit’s activities across the country.
The Nepal Police Headquarters on Wednesday directed all its units to increase surveillance against the outfit's activities, and be ‘aggressive’ against them. It has also directed all its units to provide security to those providing information about the outfit.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also had a meeting with the representatives of all the four security bodies – Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and National Investigation Department – on Wednesday to discuss ways to control the activities of the outfit.
Most Chand outfit leaders, cadres out on bail: Police
“The headquarters has directed all its units to be aggressive against the outfit. Surveillance has also been increased to keep an eye on the activities conducted by the outfit,” said Senior Superintendent of Police, Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, further adding that Nepal Police has also been coordinating and collaborating with other security bodies to control the outfit's activities.
On Tuesday, 54-year-old teacher Rajendra Shrestha was brutally murdered by the cadres of the outfit at Miklajung Rural Municipality-1 in Morang district. The dead body of Shrestha, principal of Saraswati Preliminary School in Miklajung, was found in a forest after he was abducted from his home.
According to police, Shrestha’s throat was slit and his hands were tied behind his back.
After the incident, the Mechi-Koshi Bureau of the Chand-led outfit, took the responsibility for Shrestha’s murder. Issuing a statement, Pratap, who is the in-charge of the bureau, said that Shrestha had been spying against the outfit, so they had to kill him.
The outfit also said that police had increased vigil in the village and arrested their cadres based on the information provided by Shrestha.
In March 2019, the government banned all activities of the Chand-led outfit, and termed it as a criminal outfit. The decision was taken by the government as the outfit was involved in criminal activities including bomb blasts, destroying telecom towers, among others.
Following the decision of the government, leaders and cadres of the outfit went underground. Since then, almost 2,000 leaders and cadres of the outfit have been arrested from various parts of the country.
