KATHMANDU, July 12: Nepali Congress (NC) MP Jitendra Narayan Dev claims that Nepal is not heading toward an economic crisis like the one witnessed in Sri Lanka. Speaking at a special sitting of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Dev said that Nepal was not facing an economic crisis like that of Sri Lanka.
He added that vigilance was needed to prevent Nepal from becoming like Sri Lanka. He said trying to avoid the country’s problems by using the Covid-19 pandemic or the war between Russia and Ukraine as an excuse would be foolish and the same as betraying the country.

He highlighted that Sri Lanka was suffering from two decades of misguided economic policies, corruption, and familism. He also pressed that there should be a debate between economists, state actors and major political forces on what kind of loans Nepal should take and what kind of loans it should not.
MP Dev considers the current economic policy adopted by the Government of Nepal as appropriate. He said, “The economic policy of the current government is right is what I want to claim. The policy of the government to increase production, reduce imports and increase exports and bring remittances into the formal sector is right.”
He mentioned that the leaders who currently run the government should review whether they are surrounded by commission agents and middlemen.
