KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Nepal government has decided to file candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the powerful United Nations Security Council for the 2037-38 term.
A recent cabinet meeting instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to file candidacy for the non-permanent seat at the UNSC for 2037-38 term, according to the spokesperson of the government Gokul Prasad Baskota.
"The MoFA has also been instructed to intensify lobbying for securing the non-permanent seat at the UNSC," Baskota said during a weekly press briefing at Singha Durbar.
Meanwhile, spokesperson at the MoFA Bharat Raj Paudyal told Republica Online on Thursday evening that Nepal will field candidacy and start lobby for the same. "The government will lobby among various countries in order to create an environment for the same," Paudyal said.

To secure the country's non-permanent seat at the UNSC, the government needs to carry a rigorous campaign at the regional and international arena, experts say.
After becoming a member of the global body in 1955, Nepal has already served twice in the UN Security Council as an elected non-permanent member, in 1969-70 and in 1988-1989. In both these periods, Nepal had played a significant role in the United Nations.
However, Nepal had failed to secure the UNSC non-permanent seat in 2006, garnering the lowest number of votes during such an election.
Nepal has been a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2018-20 term.
