Nepali oranges on display at Kolkata exhibition

KOLKATA, Dec 9: Nepali traders have showcased Nepali oranges at an exhibition in Kolkata showcasing oranges produced in the hills.

KOLKATA, Dec 9: Nepali traders have showcased Nepali oranges at an exhibition in Kolkata showcasing oranges produced in the hills. 


Six stalls of oranges from Nepal are on display in the three-day-long exhibition ‘Himalayan Orange Tourism Fair 2018’ that begun on Friday. 


Nepali traders participating in the expo said that they were also promoting Nepal’s tourism, particularly homestay.

The exhibition is organized by the Association for Conservation and Tourism of India. There are total 30 stalls of oranges from India and Nepal. 


Chairman of the association Raj Basu said that these types of exhibition promote cross-border tourism. 


Kalpana Basnet, a wholesaler from Dharan of eastern Nepal was excited to find that the visitors were fond of Nepali oranges. 


Nepali participants from Jhapa, Sunsari, Dhankuta, Taplejung, Panchthar and Ilam districts are taking part in the exhibition, which is the third edition of the event organized in the Indian city. 


“The demand for Nepali oranges is quite high, and it seems we will be exhausted of our stock here before the exhibition ends,” said Basnet. 


Nepali exhibitors have advertised the homestay programs available in different districts, hoping to receive more Indian tourists. Most of the visitors in the exhibition are residents of the Indian state of West Bengal. 


Tourism Minister of West Bangal, Gautam Dev, said that the exhibition aimed at promoting oranges of high hills including Nepal and also facilitate cross border tourism. 


The Indian participants come from Darjiling, Sikkim and other places from the hills of the northeastern region of India.
