It’s time for resolutions and The Week asked some personalities who graced our pages this year to tell us what they are looking forward to in 2018 to get us started on our own goal planning. Here they share their hopes, wishes, and dreams.

Manohar Adhikari, businessman

Every businessman’s dream is to take their company to great heights. So my plan for 2018 is to expand Foodmandu and establish it in one more city outside Kathmandu. I also intend to provide better service to my customers. Achieving these dreams requires a lot of hard work but I’m determined to make 2018 a success.

Also, time management has always been a challenge for me. I tend to get extremely busy with my work and give very little time to myself. Next year, I intend to balance my personal and professional life more efficiently. I will try to delegate work to my staff more systematically so that I have less work on my plate.

Amar Neupane, writer

I feel like listing out resolutions and aspirations for the coming year jinxes it somehow. Whenever I talk about my plans for the upcoming year, I have noticed that it has never panned out accordingly. It works a lot better when I don’t discuss them. But, of course, I do have new goals each year and I do want to see them through.

One of the things that I am looking forward to the most in 2018 is the release of my new book. The plan was to bring it out in 2017 but it didn’t quite work out that way. But now I am determined to launch it early in 2018.

I don’t want any spoilers out but I can tell you the book has been inspired by my 12-year stint as a teacher. In hindsight, I realize I learnt a lot during those days. While I was merely referring to and teaching from books, the students taught me many things about life. So, for me, the release of the new book is the most exciting prospect of 2018.

Sabin Karki, dancer, choreographer

It has always been my dream to promote young and talented artists. In 2018, I tend to take this dream even further. I want to create a platform to groom artists and make them renowned not only in Nepal but all over the world. I also plan to make more videos and skits for YouTube and Facebook. Entertaining people has always been my passion and I want to continue with it. This year, I got a lot of support and appreciation from my viewers and I want to keep meeting their expectations in the coming year as well.

Lastly, my long-term goal is to direct and act in movies. So one of my resolutions is to collaborate with artists and make more songs, videos, and documentaries. I believe working with talented people will give me the experience and exposure that will help me reach my goals.

Barsha Raut, actor

I have given up making resolutions because I can never stick to them. There was a great resolution that I made for myself a few years ago: to keep my diet in balance. But because of the fact that chocolates taste good and diet food does not, I could never stick to it. But this New Year, I think I will give it another shot. I won’t say it’s my New Year resolution but I will work hard to get the body I want. I don’t like feeling bloated and out of shape and it’s about time I do something about it. I’m also looking forward to many good projects in 2018 so it looks like it will be an exciting year. I also want to make time for my family and friends this year, no matter how packed my schedule is.

Mannu Shahi, guitarist

My next year’s plan is to publish a new independent album. Over the past few years, I have worked with several bands and gained a lot of knowledge and experience. Now I intend to refine my abilities and contribute to the field of Nepali music. I have already started working on my songs and most of them are complete. Hopefully next year I will be able to release my first album. Secondly, I also want to become better as a person and cultivate a habit of being thankful towards everyone and everything in life. As Nepalis, most of us have the habit of complaining about things and blaming others for the miserable state of our nation. One of my resolutions for 2018 is to be the change I want to see. A small step can always make a big difference.

Nisha Sharma, actor

2017 was an okay year for me. I got to travel. We (the Gurukul team and I) performed our drama Yagya Seni in different places in the US. We were there for more than three months. Aside from that, nothing really happened in life. Everything was pretty normal and consistent. I don’t mean that’s a bad thing though. But 2018 is going to be a big one. We are going to Delhi sometime around March to participate in the Theatre Olympics held at the National School of Drama with Jaya Maya Aafu Matra Lekhapani Aai Pugi, so I’ll be busy with that. I also want to lead a healthier lifestyle, not necessarily to lose weight though. I guess I feel my age has caught up to me and I now need to take care of my body.

Asis Rana (Laure), rapper

I want to live in a healthier, wiser, and more mature way in 2018. This year has been tremendous for me. It’s been a productive year where I have worked the hardest and released the most number of music and music videos. The plan is to keep the momentum going.

Work wise, I hope to release my second album by the end of 2018. I’m working on it at the moment. Basically, with this album, I wanted to go back to my underground roots. It’s where I am from but, of late, I feel like I might have lost myself a little in the mainstream. So the new releases will be with focus on the underground scene. The 2018 album will also have many collaborations and more tracks than in the last record. I’m also looking forward to Roadies season 2 and tours around Australia and the USA.

Where my lifestyle is concerned, I want to be healthier and look sharper than I do at the moment. But I don’t like going to the gym so I think I will probably take boxing classes. I’m definitely interested in that. I also want to act more responsibly this year. I feel like I can be a bit childish at times but come 2018 I want to change that.

Mira Rai, trail runner

2017 has been memorable what with National Geography’s recognition but the year was also more about recuperation for me. I had ligament issues but now, with all the training and rest, I’m recovering.

So the priority in 2018 is going to be running. I hope to compete in seven different races in different parts of the world. This year, I participated in two races and the results weren’t bad. However, come 2018, I would like to improve those records.

In 2018, we also plan to help those interested in running. The Kathmandu Trail event that comes around each month shall continue in 2018 too. Its aim is to introduce people to the sport and many of the participants run for fun. So it would be nice to spread the word about that and get more people involved. With our small initiatives, I want to continue exploring the possibilities to encourage our aspiring running enthusiasts.

Sugam Pokharel, singer

I had an excellent year. I would go as far as calling 2017 one of my best years yet. I got good responses for the singles I released and that’s very important to me. I toured quite a lot both in Nepal and overseas. Other than that, I’m very content with my life right now. Everything in my life is going on well and I couldn’t ask for more. I got to spend quality time with people who matter to me.

I’ll be starting 2018 in Japan. I’m going there for a show and will be there on the first day of the New Year. I’ve got so many performances and shows lined up in 2018 that I’m excited and looking forward to the New Year. I’m planning on releasing another album in the near future too. I’ve almost completed everything for it. So, I’m anticipating that as well. And I want to grow as a musician during the course of the year.
