KATHMANDU, Nov 1: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received news that its ranking on the global stage will remain at the 'A' category.

The announcement came from the Sub-committee on Accreditation (SCA), a constituent of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions and the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANRI).

SCA conveyed this decision to the NHRC on Wednesday, marking a significant change from their previous recommendation to downgrade it to a 'B' category last year, according to NHRC officials.

Notably, GANRI had earlier placed Nepal's NHRC on a watch list due to a dispute surrounding the appointment of office bearers within the organization. This had raised concerns about the NHRC's standing in the global community.

However, in a recent turn of events, the SCA sub-committee expressed satisfaction with the Commission's performance and noted positive progress in the law-making process. As a result, they have chosen to maintain the Commission's status as an 'A' category institution.

It's worth mentioning that GANRI consists of 120 member countries, with 88 countries classified under the 'A' category and 32 under the 'B' category, indicating the ranking of National Human Rights Institutions worldwide.
