LONDON, May 27: The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) has demanded the continuation of Nepali citizenship for non-resident Nepalis. The Association put forth this demand in a memorandum it handed to the Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Devendra Paudel, who is currently in the UK.

An NRNA UK chapter President Prem Gaha Magar led-team handed a memo to Minister Paudel, drawing attention of the government towards amendment in the laws, acts, rules and regulations of Nepal that enable citizenship cards for non-resident Nepalis.

The memo also indicated some ambiguous and inconsistent rules that had politically disconnected non-resident Nepalis from their roots, heritage, lineage, culture, societies and home country simply because they were living abroad whilst being born to Nepali parents abroad or in Nepal.

The NRNA has urged revision in the 'unequal' laws that deprive non-resident Nepalis of the citizenship of Nepal.

According to the NRNA, there is a lack of clear policies and rules in Nepal regarding the acquisition, use and transfer of immovable properties, causing insecurity among non-resident Nepalis of their immovable properties in Nepal.

"There should not be any discrimination between Nepalis and non-resident Nepalis regarding the acquisition, use and ownership transfer of property since the Constitution of Nepal guarantees the people’s right to property."

Furthermore, the memo has called for the delivery of justice to Gorkha soldiers, and creating an environment to take into consideration the concerns of Nepali students in the UK, among others.
