KATHMANDU, June 13 :Demanding withdrawal of hiked prices of petroleum products, Nepal Students Union (NSU) affiliated to the main opposition Nepali Congress staged torchlight protests in different parts of the country on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s protest was the second phase of protests, according to NSU, which organized whistle demonstrations on June 10 in the first phase of the protest. The third phase of protests will be organized on Thursday by burning the effigy of Prime Minister KP Oli, who the protest organizers said, is solely responsible for the fuel price hike.

NSU organized torchlight marches at Amrit Science Campus and Tri-Chandra Campus, and at Baneshwar, Chabahil, Balaju, Thapathali, Exhibition Road, Lalitpur and Kirtipur in the Kathmandu Valley. Similar protests were organized Tuesday outside the capital as well, according to the student union.

Since the formation of the new government, it has increased the prices of petroleum products five times in the past four months.

“While the prices of petroleum products have fallen in the international market, our government hiked it five times,” said Pushpa Kumar Shahi, vice-president of NSU. “It has added burden to the ordinary people,” he said.
