NTA seeks TikTok's assistance in implementing government's decision

KATHMANDU, Nov 18: About a dozen petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) against the government's decision to ban TikTok. Lawyers and digital rights advocates filed a petition in the SC against the government's decision to ban TikTok as unconstitutional.


Meanwhile, The SC is to preside over a preliminary hearing on November 20 in relation to the writ petitions filed against the government decision to ban TikTok. About 10 writ petitions have been filed at the SC against the government's decision to ban TikTok in Nepal.

On the first day of the opening of the courts after the Tihar holidays, legal practitioners submitted writ petitions challenging the government's decision.


The Council of Ministers meeting held on November 13 decided to immediately ban the use of TikTok in Nepal stating that there are activities that are negatively affecting social harmony and social environment.


After the government made the decision, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority wrote a letter to TikTok and informed about it. TikTok had written a letter to the authority and expressed concern about such a decision taken by the Nepali government.


In the seven-point letter, TikTok mentioned the agreements with the government agencies of Nepal and the discussions were held in Nepal. Meanwhile, the NTA has again sent another letter to TikTok on Friday, asking it to help implement the decision made by the Nepali government.
