Number of 4G users crossed 40,000

KATHMANDU, Jan 21: The number of Nepal Telecom (NT) subscribers activating the company’s newly-installed fourth generation mobile phone technology system (4G) crossed 40,000 in the first 15 days. NT started offering 4G services for GSM postpaid subscribers on January 1.

KATHMANDU, Jan 21: The number of Nepal Telecom (NT) subscribers activating the company’s newly-installed fourth generation mobile phone technology system (4G) crossed 40,000 in the first 15 days. NT started offering 4G services for GSM postpaid subscribers on January 1.


Kamini Rajbhandari, the managing director (MD) of Nepal Telecom, said the number of 4G subscribers has been increasing.


Speaking at a parliament meeting on Wednesday, Rajbhandari said 4G was becoming popular among subscribers.

She also said that 4G services will be supported on Apple Inc’s iPhone devices soon.


“We have already sent a letter to Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc [Tim Cook],” she said. The meeting on Wednesday directed NT to expand 4G services to the whole country within a year. The parliament also directed Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) and the Ministry of Information & Communications (MoIC) to help in the expansion of the service.


The house directed NT, MoIC and NTA to amend the 20 years old telecommunications act, 1997, and the telecommunications policy, 2003.


Likewise, the house also directed them to work on problems like weak networks, and balance top-up and recharge problems within a month. The committee has also directed NT to provide internet services to rural areas of the country by utilizing the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund.


Speaking at the meeting, Member of Parliament Lalit Jung Sahi called NT employees lazy compared to other service providers.


4G FOR PREPAID FROM FEBRUARY 4


NT says its prepaid service subscribers can start using 4G services from February 4.


NT MD Kamini Rajbhandari said it will introduce 4G services for prepaid service subscribers on the occasion of its anniversary. She added that NT will also expand 4G services to the whole country within a year. According to Rajbhandari, NT is also preparing to restart the caller ring back tone (CRBT) on the occasion of its anniversary.
