KATHMANDU May 17: The Nagrik Unmukti Party (NUP) has announced a Nepal Banda (general strike) for five days starting May 20. 


The party’s Vice-Chairman Damodar Pandit said that the protest is being organized to protest against the Supreme Court’s decision against their patron, Resham Lal Chaudary.

The NUP stated that if the government does not make the High-Level Probe Commission report public, a nation-wide torch rally, corner meeting will be held from May 17 to 19 along with a general strike from May 20 to 24.


NUP has put forth the demand for unconditional release of Chaudhary. The party submitted a bill to parliament for an amendment to the law. However, the road has been closed after the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s order on Tuesday. 


The party’s Chairperson, Ranjeeta Shrestha, who is also the current Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation. She is Chaudhary’s wife. She joined the government after a promise that her husband would be released.
