KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Prime Minister KP Oli on Wednesday said that the government would act ‘like a tigress’ to protect democracy and republicanism which he claimed was coming under threat. For months now, the government has been accusing royalist forces of hatching plots to overthrow the system to restore Nepal as a Hindu kingdom.
Oli, while speaking after laying the foundation stone of the federal parliament building in Singha Durbar, accused ‘some elements’ of trying to change the system and push the country into instability. He claimed that they were trying their best to project the government in poor light and eventually bring down the system through propaganda.
The left government, Oli said, would never let that happen, and would immediately spring into action’ if democracy, republicanism and federalism come under attack. The government will act in the same way ‘a tigress acts to protect her cubs’.

“The government is all committed to safeguarding the political achievements gained after the sacrifice of the people,” Oli said, claiming that the aforementioned elements were trying their best to deteriorate the democratic sphere.
Ever since Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Kamal Thapa announced that time had come to change the system, leaders of the ruling Nepal Communist Party have intensified their attacks against the royalist forces, projecting them as a threat to democracy.
Thapa in July had said that Nepal’s problems could be resolved only through the change of system, not through the change of government.
In August, Oli, while addressing the parliament, had warned the royalists not to daydream about ‘bringing back the old system from grave’.
Interestingly, the main opposition Nepali Congress has been projecting the left as a bigger threat to democracy than the monarchists.
