One killed, four injured in Kanchanpur clash

KANCHANPUR, Aug 25: A 17-year-old boy was killed and others injured on Friday after police opened fire at protesters demanding justice for rape and murder victim Nirmala Panta.

KANCHANPUR, Aug 25: A 17-year-old boy was killed and others injured on Friday after police opened fire at protesters demanding justice for rape and murder victim Nirmala Panta.


Following an indefinite strike enforced by protesters on Tuesday, a curfew was clamped on Thursday.  Mahendranagar had remained tense for over a week. Things were calming down and life heading back to normal on Friday morning.  But a few hours later police shot one dead and injured many others during a clash in front of the District Traffic Police Office. This has added fuel to the fire.

The deceased has been identified as Shani Khuna, 17, of Bhimdatta Panta Municipality-18, according to Police Inspector Kuber Kadayat. Nirmala Panta was also from the same village. He has received a bullet wound to his chest.


Kabindra Bahadur Singh, Umesh Deuba, Damodar Khatri and Suresh Chataut are among the injured.  Irate locals intensified their protests against police after 4 pm.


There were major clashes between police and protesters in front of the District Administration Office (DAO), the Municipality office, the District Court and various other public places. The injured were initially rushed to   Mahakali Zonal Hospital. Later, Deuba was transferred to Seti Zonal Hospital. Meanwhile, the DAO has imposed an indefinite curfew from Friday evening. Locals have been strictly warned not to come out of their homes.
