Pakistani nationals arrested for holding Sri Lankan citizens hostage

KATHMANDU, April 6: Four Pakistani nationals who brought Sri Lankan citizens to Nepal and held them hostage under false promises of foreign employment have been apprehended by the police.


The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office of the Nepal Police arrested them and successfully rescued the hostages. The individuals taken into custody are 57-year-old Zubair Amzad from Rawalpindi, Pakistan, 42-year-old Shah Jehan Tanbir from Gujranwala, 61-year-old Malik Abdul Hamid, and 44-year-old Arif Masih.

According to the police, these individuals brought four Sri Lankan citizens into Nepal with the promise of sending them to countries like Canada, Romania and Greece for employment opportunities. Once in Nepal, the victims were kept captive in hotels in Thamel and Bus Park, and their passports were confiscated. The perpetrators then proceeded to extort money from the victims, threatened them and physically assaulted them, preventing them from contacting their families.


"The suspicious activities of the perpetrators came to the attention of our duty team. Following this information, the incident was brought to light," stated SP Nakul Pokharel, the spokesperson for the Crime Investigation Office.


The four arrested have been transferred to the Kathmandu District Police Range in Teku for further investigation and legal action for the crimes of kidnapping and hostage-taking.
