KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Sudan Kirati, a parliament member of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, on Sunday demanded the resignation of government spokesperson Gokul Baskota.

Objecting to Baskota's recent statement regarding the US MCC grant, the NCP lawmaker sought his resignation.

"In the context of MCC, the minister's statement is highly objectionable. He said the grant would be approved through the parliament at any cost. He also warned the Nepali leaders that the US will finish them off like Iran's Soleimani if they opposed MCC deal," Kirati said while referring to Baskota's remarks at a weekly press briefing.

The lawmaker also suggested other MPs to seek resignation of Minister Baskota over his controversial remarks.

"The government's spokesperson's statement is against the spirit of the country's sovereignty. Hence, he should step down from his post with immediate effect," Kirati said adding that the government cannot surrender to the United States.

On a different note, MP Naradmuni Rana said that Nepal requires quality leadership to deal with crucial issues like MCC and the coronavirus impact.

During the meeting, NCP MP Bhim Rawal reiterated that MCC is an integral part of the US Indo Pacific strategy. "I urge one and all to go through the IPS and other policy documents unveiled by the US Defense Department which show that MCC is an integral part of IPS. Given this situation, how can we endorse the MCC?" he questioned.

Rawal also urged the committee to hold an intense debate, particularly on the MCC.
