Party registration for upper house member election begins

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: The party registration for the National Assembly [upper house] elections has begun from Friday.

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: The party registration for the National Assembly [upper house] elections has begun from Friday. 


Political parties willing to participate in election will need to register themselves with the Election Commission.  


Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya informed that registration opened from Friday and parties can register themselves till December 22.

Of the total 59 NA members, the term of 19 members is expiring on March 3 next year.  


Provincial Assembly members and chiefs and deputy chiefs of local units vote to elect new members whereas one member will be picked by the president.   


Of the total 19 members retiring, nine are from the ruling Nepal Communist Party, seven from the Nepali Congress, two from the Rastriya Janata Party and one from Samajbadi Party. 


The election body has set January 23 as voting day for upper house members. 


The election body should elect new upper house members 35 days before term expiry of the outgoing members.
