PM Oli pays homage to martyrs in capital

KATHMANDU, Jan 30: Prime Minister K.P Sharma Oli visited Martyrs' Memorial Park, Lainchaur in the capital to pay homage to martyrs on Thursday.


Speaking at the program, which was organized to mark the Martyrs' Day, Oli extended condolences to the brave martyrs adding that their contribution to establishing democracy in the country would always be remembered.


"We should never forget the significant contributions made by martyrs to overthrow the autocratic Rana, Panchayat and Monarchial regimes in the different periods of the country's history," Oli said.


Earlier today morning, a rally was organized from Shanti Batika, Ratnapark to Martyrs' Memorial, Lainchaur to commemorate the martyrs. People from various walks of life including politicians, senior government officials and parliamentarians joined the rally.

On Wednesday, the statues of martyrs Gangalal Shrestha and Dashrath Chand were unveiled in Kathmandu coinciding with the Martyrs' Week.  


Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Bidya Sundar Shakya had inaugurated statues erected at Shova Bhagawati.


Mayor Shakya today inaugurated Dharma Bhakta Memorial Park at Ward 23 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.


Every year, Magh 16 in the Nepali calendar is marked as the National Martyrs’ Day in the commemoration of those who were executed by the autocratic Rana regime and those who lost their lives during the country's various democratic struggles.


A separate program was held at Sahid Gate, Sundhara to pay homage to the martyrs.


Martyrs Shastri and Mathema were hanged on January 24, 1941, at Pachale, Teku. Martyrs Shrestha and Chand were shot dead by the Rana rulers for waging a struggle at the people level to oust the Rana regime on January 25 in the same year at Shova Bhagawati in the capital.


This year's Martyrs’ Week had started on January 24.
