Police arrest Thai nun for 'smuggling' foreign currencies

KATHMANDU, March 24: Police on Friday arrested four Thai citizens, including a Thai nun, from Tribhuvan International Airport on the charge smuggling foreign currencies.

KATHMANDU, March 24: Police on Friday arrested four Thai citizens, including a Thai nun, from Tribhuvan International Airport on the charge smuggling foreign currencies.


According to DIG Pankaj Shrestha at the TIA, the four Thai citizens were scheduled to fly to Thailand on Thai Airlines flight at 2pm on Friday. Police has acquired US $ 286,162 and Indian Rupees 273,180 and 46,800 Thai baht from them.

"They have been telling us that they were unaware of the Nepal's law and they were carrying the foreign currencies to build a Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya," said Shrestha. According to Shrestha, the investigation is going on the case and their identities are yet to be revealed.


As per the legal provision, foreign currency worth or equivalent to US $ 5,000 is only allowed to take away from immigration points.
