Prabhu Ram Sharma is new Army Chief

KATHMANDU, August 27: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appointed Chief of General Staff of Nepal Army, Prabhu Ram Sharma, as the new chief of the national army.

KATHMANDU, August 27: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appointed Chief of General Staff of Nepal Army, Prabhu Ram Sharma, as the new chief of the national army.


President Bhandari appointed Sharma, who is currently serving as the Acting Chief of Nepal Army, to the post of Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) of the national army as per Article 267 (5) of the Constitution of Nepal.

The three-year term of the incumbent Army Chief Purna Chandra Thapa expires on September 9. He is currently on leave as per the tradition of army chiefs staying on leave one month before their retirement.


A Cabinet meeting held on July 27 had recommended to President Bhandari to appoint Sharma — the second in command of the army — to the post of Acting Chief of Nepal Army.
