KATHMANDU, Sept 17: President Bidya Devi Bhandari nominated Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam as a National Assembly member on Thursday.
Issuing a press statement, the Office of the President stated that Gautam has been nominated to the post of National Assembly member upon the recommendation of the government in accordance with Article 86 (2) of the Constitution.

Earlier on September 3, the ruling NCP had decided to nominate Gautam as a member of the National Assembly.
Likewise, a Cabinet meeting held on September 14 had recommended the name of Gautam to President Bhandari to appoint him to the upper house in the seat that fell vacant after the two-year term of the then Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada came to an end six months ago.
As per the provision in the Constitution, the president can appoint three members to the upper house at the recommendation of the government. There are a total of 59 members in the upper house.
