Public transport fare goes up in Kathmandu Valley as NOC hikes diesel price

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: The fares of taxis and other public vehicles operating in the Bagmati Province have increased. 


After the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) increased the price of petroleum products on August 16, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Transport (MoLET) has increased the fares of public transport operating within the Bagmati Province.


A ministerial level meeting held at the MoLET on August 21 increased the public transport fare to be implemented from August 24. The new public transport fares have been published in the gazette on Thursday.

According to the new public transport fares, the fare for vehicles operating within Kathmandu Valley has increased to Rs 19 for 5 km, Rs 26 for 10 km, Rs 31 for 15 km, Rs 35 for 20 km and Rs 40 for more than 20 km.


Similarly, the fare of passenger vehicles operating in places other than the valley has increased by 5.31 percent.


A few days ago, the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) increased the fare of public vehicles operating in the inter-province routes.


The average market price of diesel on July 17 was Rs 144.83, and by August 16, the average market price was Rs 165.83 per liter.


As this price is 14.50 percent higher than the price taken as base in the last adjustment, the interprovincial public transport fare was adjusted with effect from August 16.


According to the specified fare issued by DoTM, the fare of passenger vehicles has increased by 4.70 percent. The price of cargo vehicles operating on mountain roads has increased by 6.15 percent and the price of cargo vehicles operating on Terai roads has increased by 6.83 percent.
