Rape and corruption-convict should be given death penalty: Tamang

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Former Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang has demanded that the government take the initiative toward formulating a provision of death penalty against those convicted of rape and corruption crimes.

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Former Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang has demanded that the government take the initiative toward formulating a provision of death penalty against those convicted of rape and corruption crimes.


Delivering on the resolution motion against Violence Against Women (VAW) at a parliament meeting in New Baneshwar on Friday, Tamang suggested formulating a provision of death penalty for those involved in such heinous crimes in line with the international law.


“Nepal should float a proposal in the United Nations as regards formulating a provision of death penalty,” said Tamang.

“Nepal’s constitution does not have provisions of death penalty. To reverse this provision, Nepal has to submit a proposal in the United Nations,” suggested Tamang.


Tamang went on to say that rape is damaging to the society while corruption eats up the state, Tamang said, adding, “Those convicted of rape and corruption cases should be given death penalty.”


Tabled by lawmaker Brinda Pandey, on the resolution motion against the VAW, lawmaker Shashi Shrestha also advocated for the provision of death penalty.
