KATHMANDU, April 27: A meeting of the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) has decided to hold its first general convention by mid-November. The three-day general convention has been scheduled to start from November 14.
RJPN, the party which was formed ahead of the 2017 parliamentary election by merging six regional fringe parties, was under pressure to hold the general convention. In June 2018, the Election Commission (EC) had asked the party to hold its general convention citing legal provision of electoral law that each new party should elect the leadership by holding general convention within a year of its formation. The party, however, had requested the election body to give more time citing special circumstances.

As part of holding the convention a meeting of the party on Friday has formed a main general convention organizing committee headed by consortium member Mahantha Thakur. Several other sub-committees are formed to assist the main organizing committee and make the convention a success. The meeting of office bearers has decided to give complete shape to the party's sister organizations before the convention.
On contemporary issues, the party has demanded the government to release the party's leader Resham Chaudhary, withdraw cases filed against other party leaders and cadres and release the report of Lal Probe Commission's Report on Tikapur incident. The party has threatened to protest against the government from all available forums if the demands are not addressed.
Leaders have also agreed to continue talks with like-minded parties to bolster their strength in the coming days. Recently, the party is holding closed-door negotiations with the Upendra Yadav-led Federal Socialist Forum Nepal to unite the parties to form a new party.
