KATHMANDU, June 18 : The Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) has demanded immediate release of its supporters who were arrested from various places across the tarai. RJPN leader Mahendra Raya Yadav has claimed that around 455 people have been arrested by security forces since Saturday.
Yadav in a statement accused the government of cracking down on dissident voices through the use of force. He claimed that the government had used excessive force to suppress peaceful protests in Ramgram of Nawalparasi, Taulihawa, Bijaya Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Kailali, Dhanusa and other places of the tarai.
Baidya demands immediate release of party cadres
In a separate statement, the National Human Rights Commission has also urged both sides to exercise restraint. The party has urged protestors to launch peaceful protest, while appealing the government to respect the people’s rights to peaceful assembly.
Earlier on the day, RJPN leaders including Yadav and Sharat Singh Bhandari had met NHRC members to draw the constitutional body’s attention toward excessive use of force by the police.
