KATHMANDU, Dec. 18: Experts and stakeholders have laid emphasis on effective implementation of the existing laws and thorough monitoring in order to ensure safe, secured and regular labor migration.
At a program organized by the Foreign Employment Promotion Board Secretariat in the capital city on Tuesday on International Migrants' Rights Day-2018, they, however, claimed that the Act, laws and regulations adopted by the Nepal government were progressive compared to other countries.
Implement laws for welfare of works, says UN rapporteur
On the occasion, labor migration expert and Think Tank Member Dr Ganesh Gurung shared that implementation aspect was weak despite sufficient laws made to make labor migration safe and secured. "We have mechanism in place to implement laws. Policy level decisions have also taken place. But, there is lack of their effective implementation. Now, effective implementation and monitoring is the way forward," Dr Gurung said.
Sending our youth to countries with poor human rights index in the Gulf should be brought to an end and comparatively prosperous destination should be identified, he suggested. "
Likewise, former secretary of the government Purna Chandra Bhattarai said that the issues of foreign employment should be localized since most of the rural youth end up landing in the labor destination countries.
He also stressed the need for a national policy formulation on labor migration.
Also speaking at the programme, chairwoman of Pourakhi Nepal Manju Gurung voiced against the government move to impose a ban on women as domestic help abroad.
