KATHMANDU, June 28: The Supreme Court on Wednesday annulled a provision in Mountaineering Expedition Regulations that bars double amputee and blind persons from climbing mountains including Mt Everest.
A five-member constitutional bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee and justices Om Prakash Mishra, Cholendra SJB Rana, Deepak Kumar Karki and Kedar Prasad Chalise annulled the provision terming it as discriminatory and as against the constitutional right to equality.

The government had a few months ago amended regulations relating to mountaineering expeditions which barred blind and other disabled individuals from climbing. But as the new amendment was challenged at the court, the apex court had stayed the provision back on March 7.
Challenging the amendment, a writ petition was filed by Madhav Prasad Chamlagain who also represents the persons with disabilities in the central executive board of the Federation of Nepali Journalists.
