KATHMANDU, April 9: Following the instructions of Mayor Balendra Shah, the garbage collection of Singha Durbar has come to a halt. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has stopped collecting garbage from Singha Durbar since Sunday.
Mayor Shah had announced through social media that KMC would not pick up garbage on Friday, citing non-cooperation from Singha Durbar in the work of the metropolis. Taking that declaration as the basis, KMC did not pick up the garbage of Singha Durbar.
"In our ward, garbage is being picked up from all places except Singha Durbar," said Hiralal Tandukar, ward chairman of Ward No 11.

Mitra Prasad Ghimire, general secretary of the Garbage Management Association, said that the garbage was not collected after Mayor Shah called him and instructed him not to pick up the garbage from Singha Durbar premises. "We were going to collect the garbage from Singha Durbar and take it to Banchare Danda, but after the Mayor called and told us not to do so, we stopped it.”
According to Ghimire, who is also the operator of Pariwartan Sewa Pvt Ltd, which is in charge of collecting garbage, five tons of garbage, both decomposable and non-decomposable, used to be picked up from Singha Durbar every day. Ghimire said that the garbage collected from Singha Durbar is taken to the landfill site at Banchare Danda.
Pariwartan Seva Pvt Ltd was collecting garbage from Singha Durbar under a contract with the Ministry of Urban Development. Suresh Acharya, secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, called Ghimire and instructed him to pick up the garbage, but Mayor Balen said, "Singh Durbar's garbage should not go to Banchare Danda.”
